H&S Made Simple – Step 1

Health and Safety doesn’t have to be complicated, time-consuming, or arduous. But we do need to get it right! This series of blog posts is going to break down a simple set of practical tasks that will not only protect people from harm, but also your business.
Step 1 – Appoint a Competent Person
As an employer you must appoint someone competent to help you meet your health and safety duties. Having the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to manage health and safety for your business will not only help you comply with the law but makes good business sense.
The HSE describe competency as ‘the ability to undertake responsibilities and perform activities to a recognised standard on a regular basis. It combines practical and thinking skills, knowledge and experience. The competent person should focus on the significant risks and those with serious consequences’.
Perhaps you have someone in your business that could fulfil this role but needs a bit more training? If you are not confident in your ability to manage it in-house, or if you are a higher-risk business, perhaps you need some external competent help and advice?
Always remember the approach you take should be proportionate to the size of your business and the nature of your business activity.
